Bob Masse, a Canadian artist and poster artist, died September 21, 2026, aged 81.
From British Columbia, he began designing concert posters in the 1960s while attending art school in Vancouver. A presence in the city’s coffeehouses, he was asked to make posters for folk acts performing there, and his commissions expanded as Vancouver hosted touring folk-rock bands.
His increasingly psychedelic artwork advertised appearances by the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and the Steve Miller Band. Masse’s work was shaped by the art and music scenes of Los Angeles and San Francisco, where he lived in the late 1960s. He produced posters and album covers for bands of the period before returning to Vancouver in 1969. There, he made posters for local venues including the Retinal Circus, Moose Valley Farms and Gassy Jack’s. Concert poster design remained part of his work over subsequent decades. In later years, he created pieces for performers including Tori Amos, the Smashing Pumpkins and Neil Young, extending his work to musicians whose careers came after the early folk-rock era.
