Bob Davenport, the English traditional folk singer who helped shape the British folk revival from the early 1960s, died on September 28, 2026, aged 94.
Born Robert H. Davenport in Gateshead, County Durham, on May 31, 1932, he came from a musical family and was distantly related to George Ridley, the writer of “Blaydon Races.” He began performing as a child during the Second World War, after surviving a gas explosion at 10 months old that killed his father and grandfather.
Davenport later became a regular presence at the Bedford Arms in Camden Town and other folk clubs, and in 1959 recorded the EP Geordie Songs with Reg Hall and Michael Plunkett, followed by Wor Geordie.
