Bert Matter, the Dutch minimalist composer and organist, died on August 26, 2026, aged 89.
Born in 1937 in Baambrugge, he graduated from the Rotterdams Conservatorium at 20 and went on to teach organ from 1960 at music schools in Deventer, Arnhem and the Utrechts Conservatorium. From 1969, he served as organist at Saint Walpurga Church in Zutphen, retiring in 2002.
Matter’s work as a teacher, improviser and composer won recognition beyond the Netherlands, and in 2012 he received the Sweelinck Prize for his contribution to organ music.
