Barry Rogerson, a British bishop who served as the first Bishop of Wolverhampton and later as Bishop of Bristol, died on August 20, 2026, aged 90.
Born on July 25, 1936, he was educated at the University of Leeds and Wells Theological College before working as a bank employee and being ordained in 1962. He went on to hold curacies at St Hilda’s, South Shields, and St Nicholas’ Bishopwearmouth, and from 1967 to 1975 he was a lecturer at Lichfield Theological College and later Salisbury and Wells Theological College.
Rogerson became the first Bishop of Wolverhampton in 1979, serving until 1985, and then Bishop of Bristol until his retirement in 2002. He also received honorary degrees from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England and was made a Freeman of the City and County of Bristol in 2003.
