Born Arthur Louis Buikema Jr. on February 4, 1941, in Cook County, Illinois, he was raised on his family’s farm in Beecher, Illinois.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst University and later received both his master’s degree and PhD from the University of Kansas. Buikema taught in the department of biological sciences at Virginia Tech from 1971 to 2015, and during that span he was named Alumni Distinguished Professor of Ecology.
