Born Sir Andrew George Lindsay Nicol on May 9, 1951, he studied at the City of London Freemen’s School, Selwyn College, Cambridge, and Harvard Law School. Called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1978, he became a Queen’s Counsel in 1995, later served as a deputy judge of the High Court from 2003 to 2009, and was appointed a High Court judge in 2009.

He was made a bencher of Middle Temple in 2004 and co-wrote Media Law with Geoffrey Robertson.
