Born Aleksey Alekseyevich Borovitin in Kirov on February 14, 1954, he competed from 1974 to 1981 and was among the leading Soviet ski jumpers of his generation. Borovitin won bronze medals in the individual normal hill event at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1974 and 1978, captured victory at the 1977 Holmenkollen ski festival, and finished fourth at that year’s Ski-flying World Championships.
He also appeared in two Winter Olympics, with a 15th-place finish in the normal hill event at Innsbruck in 1976 as his best result.
