Born John Joseph Emerick, he became known as a prolific American Muslim writer and educator whose work focused on Islam. He served as president of the Islamic Foundation of North America, founded Amirah Publishing in 1992 to promote American-oriented literature on Islam, and wrote or published more than 50 books.
