Born William Patrick Murray on April 28, 1953, he wrote fiction, short stories and comics, much of it under pseudonyms. Working with artist Steve Ditko, he co-created the superhero Squirrel Girl.
Murray also built a reputation in pulp and comics history research, winning the Lamont Award in 1979 for furthering pulp fiction research, the Comic Book Marketplace award in 1999 for research excellence, and later recognition for his revival work on The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage and Doc Savage: Skull Island.
