Born Waldtraut Skrzipek on October 14, 1936, in Halle (Saale), she was also known as Waltraud Oertel and Waltraud Skrzipek. Oertel represented the United Team of Germany in the springboard event at the 1960 Olympics, where she finished 10th.
She won four East German national titles between 1952 and 1955, and after ending her competitive career she worked as a diving and swimming coach in Gera. Her husband, Rudi Oertel, also competed at the 1960 Olympics in men’s springboard.
