Vin Denson, an English professional racing cyclist, died on October 14, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Chester on November 24, 1935, he got his first bicycle at 12: a black Hercules Falcon borrowed from his brother, with wooden blocks fitted to the pedals to make it smaller. His early rides took him to Helsby Hill, Rhyl and Prestatyn, and he also went youth-hostelling.
At 17, Denson joined Chester Road Club, first for touring and then to race. He went on to compete as a professional in major European road races, riding the Tour de France and racing as a team-mate of Rik Van Looy and Jacques Anquetil. In the Tour de France, he was a team-mate of fellow British rider Tom Simpson. Denson made a particular mark in the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first British rider to win a stage of the race; he finished 40th overall. The stage victory and the overall placing were among his results in a race that formed part of his professional career across Europe. In the 1960s, he also won the Tour of Luxembourg. His career connected British club cycling, which began with touring before he turned to competition, with the leading stage races of the period.
