Vicente Quirarte, a Mexican writer and academic, died on August 11, 2026, aged 72.
Born Vicente Quirarte Castañeda in Mexico City on July 19, 1954, he wrote poetry, theatre and essays and taught and conducted research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature, followed by a master’s degree and doctorate in Mexican literature, and was admitted to the Mexican Academy of Language in 2003 and the Colegio Nacional.
Among his honors were the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 1991 for El ángel es vampiro and the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in literature in 2024.
