Toman Brod, a Czech historian, anti-communist dissident and Holocaust survivor, died on May 23, 2026.
He was 97. Brod was born in Prague on January 18, 1929, to an assimilated Jewish family.
Before World War II, he considered himself Czech, but the upheaval of the Munich Agreement and the Nuremberg Laws left him feeling he did not belong anywhere. He was deported to Terezín in 1942 with his brother and mother and later sent to Auschwitz in 1943.
