
Timothy Yang, the Taiwanese diplomat who served as minister of foreign affairs from 2009 to 2012 and as secretary-general to the president from 2012 to 2015, died on May 24, 2026.
He was 83. Also known as Yang Chin-tien, he was born in Ershui, Changhua County, and earned a bachelor’s degree in diplomacy from National Chengchi University.
Before joining the Cabinet, Yang served as Taiwan’s representative to Ireland, Australia and Indonesia. He later was appointed foreign minister by President Ma Ying-jeou and went on to serve as secretary-general to the president.
