Timothy James Herbert, the British orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand surgery, died October 3, 2026, aged 85.
Born in Sheffield, he studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in London from 1959 to 1964. He then undertook specialist training at St George’s Hospital, also in London, under surgeon Alan Graham Apley.
Herbert’s work focused on hand surgery, particularly the scaphoid bone, and he became known for the related invention of the Herbert screw. His career took him from medical education and specialty training in Britain to a long appointment in Australia. In 1975, he joined the Hand Surgery Unit at St Luke’s Hospital in Sydney, New South Wales, where he later became director. The unit provided the setting for his work in the specialty and his focus on scaphoid surgery. He remained associated with St Luke’s until retiring in 1996. Herbert’s training in London and subsequent role in Sydney marked the main stages of a career devoted to orthopedic surgery, with particular attention to the hand and wrist. His name is linked both to the scaphoid bone and to the screw developed in connection with his work on it.
