Born Terence Patrick Donovan on 28 October 1935 in London, he built a career across stage, television and film after arriving in Australia as a teenager. He became familiar to television audiences through Australian police dramas Division 4 and Cop Shop, and later played Al Simpson in Home and Away and patriarch Doug Willis in Neighbours.
His film credits included Money Movers, Breaker Morant and The Man from Snowy River. Donovan also appeared in guest roles in serials including Prisoner, Sons and Daughters, A Country Practice and E Street. He was the father of actor and singer Jason Donovan.
