Born in Montreal on June 25, 1953, she began her career in 1976 and made films that reflected social change. Her first feature, The Big Sweep (Le Grand Remue-ménage), appeared in 1978, and she helped develop the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in 1982.
In the 1990s she moved into fiction filmmaking, beginning with Love Me, Love Me Not (J’aime, j’aime pas) in 1995. She was best known for La Classe de Madame Lise, released in 2005, which won the Jutra Award for best documentary film the following year.
