Stephen Jones, the Australian musician, video artist and writer, died on October 8, 2026, aged 75, from injuries sustained in an attack.
Born in Sydney as Stephen Raoul Jones, he began working in the electronic arts in 1975 and became a principal member of the band Severed Heads alongside Tom Ellard from 1982 to 1992. Jones developed analog video synthesizers for his own video art and for the group’s live performances and music videos, bringing his visual practice into its recorded and stage work.
His work also included video post-production engineering, curating and writing. Among his early projects was Hunting For the Future, a 1977 documentation of Nam June Paik and Charlotte Moorman’s visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales the previous year. The work entered the collections of that gallery and the Queensland Art Gallery and was included in Tell Me, Tell Me, an MCA Offsite exhibition that toured South Korea in 2011. In 1996, Jones received a New Media Arts Fellowship to develop The Brain Project, a website devoted to the science of consciousness. He completed a PhD in 2007 on the history of electronic arts in Australia to 1975, and maintained a private archive of artworks and exhibitions by artists working with art and technology.
