The only son of Sir Ralph Verney and Mary Vestey, granddaughter of Sir Edmund Vestey, he was educated at Harrow School and the University of York, where he graduated with a BSc.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and served as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1998/99.
