Bludman, an American physicist, died on August 21, 2026, aged 99. Born Sidney Arnold Bludman in New York, he studied at the Bronx High School of Science, where he graduated in 1943, then attended the City College of New York before transferring to Cornell University and earning his AB degree in 1945.
He served in the United States Navy in the Naval Ordnance Laboratory and later taught physics at Lehigh University from 1950 to 1952. Bludman then worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory until 1961 and spent the rest of his academic career in the physics department at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served from 1961 to 1998. He was named a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1966.
