Born in Ashgabat on November 6, 1962, he was known also as Sergei Nikolayevich Agashkov and represented a career that bridged Soviet and Russian football. Agashkov spent seven seasons in the Soviet Top League, including two with SKA Rostov-on-Don and five with Torpedo Moscow, before later playing four seasons in the Russian Premier League, all with Torpedo Moscow.

He also had spells with Beitar Tel Aviv, POSCO Atoms and Ankaragücü.
