Born in Miłków in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, he began working in film in 1973 after studying at the National Film School in Łódź, where he later also taught and served in academic leadership. Over a career that spanned more than three decades, he amassed more than 30 feature film credits and was the cinematographer on four features by director Paweł Pawlikowski.
His collaboration with Łukasz Żal on Pawlikowski’s Ida brought international recognition, including Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for the film’s cinematography. Lenczewski also received the European Film Award for Best Cinematographer and Poland’s Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
