Rustem Zhantiev, a Russian scientist and entomologist, died on August 5, 2026, aged 88.
Born in Yalta on October 11, 1937, he specialized in the systematics, ecology and physiology of insect acoustic communication, orientation and neurophysiology. Zhantiev graduated from the biology faculty of Moscow State University in 1960 and spent much of his career there, working from 1960 to 1963 in postgraduate study in entomology before remaining on the university staff.
He became a professor in 1982 and later headed the Department of Entomology in the Faculty of Biology at Moscow State University. His honors included the USSR State Prize, the Medal “Veteran of Labour,” and the title Honoured Higher education employee of the Russian Federation.
