Rosa Maria Duran, a Spanish-born Mexican translator and teacher, died on September 6, 2026, aged 99.
Born in Barcelona in 1927, she spent more than six decades promoting Catalan culture in Mexico after her family left Spain in the aftermath of the fall of Catalonia to Francoist forces, first for France and then, when she was 15, for Mexico, where she lived for the rest of her life. Duran also worked as a translator and interpreter for the United Nations and received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2022 for her cultural preservation work.
