He also worked as a director, playwright, musician, composer and educator, and performed under the names Bob Hill and, briefly, Robert Hill II before adopting the prefix “Kya” after joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1961, when union rules required a different name. Raised in North Carolina and later Harlem, New York City, he studied silk screen work at the High School of Industrial Arts and served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War before turning more fully to music and the performing arts.
