Dickinson, an American meteorologist and geoscientist, died on September 11, 2026, aged 86. Born Robert Earl Dickinson on March 26, 1940, in Millersburg, Ohio, he studied chemistry and physics at Harvard University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1961, then went on to meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a master’s degree in 1962 and a doctorate in 1966.

He later joined the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, in 1968 and worked on climate and computer models that examined atmospheric processes, biosphere interactions, global climate change, the carbon cycle, remote sensing and the disappearance of tropical rain forests. Dickinson was also affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Arizona and Georgia Tech, and his honors included the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, the Vetlesen Prize, the Roger Revelle Medal, the Jule G. Charney Medal and the Clarence Leroy Meisinger Award.
