Richard Gill, the Australian conductor, died on October 28, 2018, aged 76.

Born in Eastwood on November 4, 1941, he attended Marist College Eastwood and later studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Gill became known as a conductor of choral, orchestral and operatic works, as well as a music educator and advocate for music education for children.

He was a teacher at Marsden High School in West Ryde before becoming a professional conductor, and in 1969 he was the founding conductor of the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra in Sydney. He later held roles at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and received honours including the Medal of the Order of Australia, the Centenary Medal, the Officer of the Order of Australia and the Don Banks Music Award.
