Gurung, also known as Yukta or Yukta Tamu, was born on December 23, 1988, and built a career in high-altitude guiding after beginning work as a porter in 2009. He later rose through the ranks from kitchen helper to assistant guide, trekking guide and expedition guide, and was credited with 28 ascents on mountains above 8,000 metres.
