Pierre-André Kombila, a Gabonese politician, professor and physician who served as a member of parliament, died on October 15, 2026, aged 85.
Born in Lac Anengué, near Port-Gentil, he studied medicine in France and became a cardiologist. After declining opportunities to work in Europe, he returned to Gabon in 1977 and founded a cardiology department the following year.
Alongside his medical career, Kombila became a leading figure in the opposition National Rally of Woodcutters (RNB), serving as its first secretary from 1990 to 1998. He was a member of parliament from 1990 to 1996 and again from 2006 to 2011. In 1998, after breaking from the RNB, he established the more radical National Rally of Woodcutters–Democrats (RNB-D) and became its candidate in that year’s presidential election, receiving a small share of the vote. Kombila later joined the government, serving as minister of technical and vocational education from 2006 to 2009 and briefly as minister of hydraulic resources and new energies in 2009. After President Omar Bongo’s death that year, he returned to the opposition.
