Peter Wolfenden, a New Zealand harness racer and trainer of Standardbred racehorses, died on February 19, 2023, aged 88.
Widely known as Peter Tom Wolfenden and also as Peter Wolfenden MBE, he built one of the country’s most successful careers in the sport, winning the New Zealand drivers’ premiership 14 times, including eight straight titles from 1974, and twice taking the Australasian Drivers Championship. He represented New Zealand seven times in the World Drivers Championship, finishing second in 1977 and third in 1971.
His record in New Zealand included 1,762 wins as a driver and 798 as a trainer. Among his notable successes was the 1963 New Zealand Trotting Cup with Cardigan Bay, and he was appointed an MBE in the 1982 New Year Honours for services to trotting. He was later inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.
