Peter Nobel dead at age 94, Swedish human rights lawyer

Peter Nobel, the Swedish human rights lawyer who served as Sweden’s first ombudsman for discrimination, died on May 26, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born on December 8, 1931, he trained at Uppsala University and built a career in law and public service that included leading the Swedish Red Cross as secretary general from 1991 to 1994 and advising the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination from 1998 to 2001. A member of the Nobel family and a great-grandson of industrialist and humanitarian Ludvig Nobel, he was also known for his criticism of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and for disputing the use of the family name by the awarding institution.
