Peter Nagy, an American artist known for post-conceptual work and his role as a gallerist, died October 13, 2026, aged 67.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1959, he studied communication design at Parsons School of Design, receiving his degree in 1981. In 1982, Nagy and artist Alan Belcher opened Gallery Nature Morte in Manhattan’s East Village.

The space was part of a generation of small, artist-run venues that offered a post-minimal alternative to established art scenes in SoHo and uptown New York. Its program brought conceptualism and pop art together, exploring the relationship between art and commodity. Nagy’s own post-conceptual art of the 1980s was closely associated with the period’s East Village activity. Gallery Nature Morte was also considered a major part of the Collins & Milazzo exhibitions’ “sensual conceptualism” scene. The gallery remained open for six years, closing in 1988. Nagy continued his work as a gallerist after moving to New Delhi, India, in 1992; Gallery Nature Morte is now located there. His career brought together art-making and the creation of an exhibition space that connected conceptual and pop approaches during a period of change in New York’s art world.
