Perry Mehrling, an American economist, died on October 13, 2026, aged 67.

He was a professor of political economy at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies and directed educational programs at the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). At INET, he was also known as the “father” of the Young Scholars Initiative.

Earlier, he taught economics at Barnard College, Columbia University, where he served on the faculty from 1987 to 2017. His research focused on financial theory and its place in the history of economic thought, bringing together two areas central to his academic work. Across his university and institute roles, his work encompassed teaching, research and educational programming. Mehrling, whose full name was Perry Gandhi Mehrling, earned a bachelor’s degree magna cum laude and a PhD from Harvard University, then completed a Master of Science at the London School of Economics. His academic training thus included undergraduate and doctoral study in the United States and graduate study in the United Kingdom. Before those university appointments, he attended Boston Latin School, where he was valedictorian of the class of 1977. His career included a three-decade faculty tenure at Barnard and later a professorship in political economy at Boston University, alongside his educational work with INET.
