Born Patrick Lindesay Archibald Godfrey in Finsbury, London, on February 13, 1933, he worked across film, television and stage. He began his professional career after winning the Carleton Hobbs Bursary in 1956 to join the Radio Drama Company, and made his film debut in Miss Julie in 1972.
Over the following decades, he appeared in British productions including A Room with a View, The Remains of the Day, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dimensions and Les Misérables, and also portrayed Leonardo da Vinci in Ever After.
