He was known for his work in physical and mechanical metallurgy and held academic and research posts at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and later at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, where he became professor of physical metallurgy. Rao earned degrees in physics and nuclear physics from Madras University and Andhra University, and a doctorate in metallurgy from Banaras Hindu University.
He also spent time as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Pennsylvania. Over his career, he contributed to research collaborations in India and abroad and received the Padma Vibhushan, along with the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize.
