Neil Andrew, an Australian politician and horticulturalist who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, died October 6, 2026, aged 82.
Known formally as John Neil Andrew, he was born in Waikerie, South Australia, on June 7, 1944, and attended Waikerie High School and Urrbrae Agricultural High School in Adelaide. He was the son of Elsie and John Clover Andrew; his father was a farmer and chaired the Waikerie District Council.
After school, Andrew returned to Waikerie, where he farmed peaches, citrus and grapes. He joined the South Australian Advisory Board of Agriculture in 1973 and served as its chairman from 1980 to 1982. He was also a member of Waikerie District Council from 1976 to 1983. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1983, Andrew represented the South Australian division of Wakefield for the Liberal Party until 2004. His parliamentary service spanned more than 20 years. In 1998, he became the 24th Speaker of the House of Representatives, holding the office until 2004. His career included agricultural work and local government in South Australia before and alongside his long service in federal Parliament.
