He was 84. Born in Baghdad and raised in Switzerland, Taqqu studied physics and mathematics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne before earning a doctorate at Columbia University in 1972 with a dissertation on limit theorems for strongly dependent random variables under the supervision of Benoit Mandelbrot.

He later lectured at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and went on to publish more than 250 papers, while also co-authoring or co-editing 11 books. His research centered on self-similar stochastic processes and their applications, a field in which his work proved influential across mathematics and network science.
