Born in Brno on July 16, 1965, he became known for work that combined naivist playfulness, irony, humor and absurdity with a darker, more tragic sense of outsider struggle. After leaving two secondary schools before graduating, he worked in a range of manual jobs before later running his own publishing house and a bookshop.

He was also a signatory of Charter 77 and received the Magnesia Litera award in 2017.
