Cernea, the Romanian-born sociologist and anthropologist who helped bring sociological and anthropological perspectives into the World Bank, died on September 10, 2026, at age 94. Born Mihail Musi Cernea in Iași, Romania, on October 14, 1931, he studied at the University of Bucharest before reestablishing himself in the United States in 1974.
Cernea served as the World Bank’s senior adviser for sociology and social policy until 1997 and wrote extensively on development-related issues, including social change, social forestry, participation, grassroots organizations and population resettlement. He is also known for coining the term “development-induced displacement and resettlement,” and his work earned him the Bronislaw Malinowski Award.
