Born in Los Angeles on March 3, 1940, she grew up in Cedar City, Utah, and later earned a nursing degree from Brigham Young University in 1962. Edmunds served as a missionary in Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Indonesia, and she was director of training at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, from 1978 to 1995.

She also served on the Relief Society general board and spent a brief period directing the Thrasher International Program for Children in Nigeria. In addition to her church work, she wrote books including Tug of War, Buck Up, Little Buckaroo and MEE Speaks.
