A catcher in Major League Baseball from 1984 to 1992, he was born John Mark Bailey on November 4, 1961, in Springfield, Missouri. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1979 and attended Southwest Missouri State University, where he played college basketball and baseball.
Bailey was twice named an NCAA Division II All-American infielder and helped lead SMS to the NCAA Division II baseball tournament in 1982. He made his major league debut with Houston in 1984 and was the team’s primary catcher in 1984 and 1985.
