She was 75. Born in Antwerp on November 17, 1950, she studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre from 1975 to 1979 and later worked in a range of media that included photography, sculpture and video installation.
Lafontaine also served as a professor of media arts at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in Brussels. Her work moved from tapestries and sculptural forms in plaster, concrete and lead to video-based installations after she began using video in her sculptures in 1980.
