Lyle Odelein, the Canadian ice hockey player and former NHL defenceman who served as the inaugural captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets, died on October 2, 2026, of a heart attack at age 58.

Born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein spent 16 seasons in the NHL and played for eight teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets. He entered the league after being drafted by Montreal in the seventh round in 1986, following junior hockey with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Known early in his career as a defensive defenceman and enforcer, he later developed into a more versatile two-way player and was part of a Stanley Cup-winning team.
