Born in Sobral on May 28, 1928, he began his career in 1962 and went on to produce 50 films over more than five decades. Among his best-known credits were The Priest and the Girl, released in 1966 and entered in the 16th Berlin International Film Festival, and Brazil Year 2000, his 1969 production that won a Silver Bear at the 19th Berlin International Film Festival.
He was also known by the name Luís Carlos Barreto and was the husband of Lucy Barreto and father of filmmakers Bruno Barreto and Fábio Barreto.
