Koji Tanaka, a Japanese football player and manager, died on May 26, 2026, at the age of 70.

Born in Saitama on November 2, 1955, he graduated from Meiji University before joining Nippon Kokan, later known as NKK, in 1978. Tanaka helped the club to the JSL Cup title in 1980 and the Emperor’s Cup in 1981, then contributed to three straight second-place finishes from 1985 and its 1987 JSL Cup victory.

He retired in 1988 after a playing career that also included 20 appearances and three goals for Japan, for which he made his debut against Romania on July 15, 1982.
