Christe, a German-born American inorganic chemist known for his work in fluorine chemistry, died on April 19, 2026. He was 89.

Born Karl Otto Christe on July 24, 1936, in Ulm, Germany, he studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart, completing his diploma in 1960 and his doctorate in 1961 under Josef Goubeau. In 1962 he immigrated to the United States and settled in California, where he worked as a senior research chemist at Stauffer Chemical Co. in Richmond before joining Rocketdyne Division Rockwell International in Canoga Park in 1967. Christe’s research focused on fluorine chemistry involving nitrogen and halogens, along with the synthesis of new energetic materials, and he was recognized for developing safer methods to study highly reactive chemicals.
