Karen Busby, a lawyer, feminist and former professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba whose work focused on queer issues, reproductive rights, constitutional law and civil procedure, died on July 23, 2026.
She was 67. Busby studied law at the University of Manitoba and received her juris doctorate in 1981, later earning a master of law from Columbia University after studying French language studies at the Sorbonne in 1983.
She worked as a research assistant and the first clerk at the Federal Court of Canada from 1984 to 1987 before joining the University of Manitoba as an assistant professor in 1988. Her scholarship on sexual violence was cited by the Supreme Court of Canada in R. v.
