Reed, an American academic and writer, died on April 16, 2026, at the age of 88. Born John Robert Reed in Duluth, Minnesota, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English and music from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1959 and completed a doctorate at the University of Rochester in 1963.
Reed later held a Leverhulme fellowship at the University of Warwick from 1966 to 1967 and taught English at the University of Connecticut from 1964 to 1965 before joining Wayne State University, where he served as a professor from 1965 until 2017. He was named a distinguished professor in 1990.
