John L.
Marion, an American auctioneer and philanthropist, died on May 6, 2026, at the age of 92. He served as chairman of Sotheby’s from 1975 to 1994 and began his career there as an auctioneer in 1960.
Born in Gardiner, New York, Marion graduated from Fordham University in 1956, served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, and studied decorative arts at Columbia University. He became president of Sotheby’s in 1972 before being named chairman three years later. During his career, he oversaw the sale of works including Vincent van Gogh’s “Irises” and Pablo Picasso’s “Yo Picasso” and “Au Lapin Agile.”
