John Hamm, a Canadian politician and physician who served as the 25th premier of Nova Scotia, died on July 13, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born John Frederick Hamm in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on April 8, 1938, he graduated from the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University before practicing family medicine in Stellarton, where he also served as president of the Nova Scotia Medical Society. He entered the legislature in 1993 as the MLA for Pictou Centre and later led the province from 1999 to 2006.
Hamm was an Officer of the Order of Canada and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
